In My Own Words: Conversation with a Target Protester VIDEO

“In My Own Words” is a platform for our community members to share essays, opinion, poetry, art, etc. “In My Own Words” is not the opinion of Gay Central Valley, but rather the person who submits the article. If you would like to submit something please email us at info@gaycentralvalley.org

I attended the Counter Protest at Target last night. At one point I had a rather odd conversation with one of the protesters.

Just to clarify... Target has a policy of inclusion and allows people to use the bathroom they feel most comfortable in. The protesters (the man I talk to included) have decided this means that little girls are suddenly at risk, a deluded straw man argument if there ever was one.

I walked away from our Counter Protest (where we were loudly thanking Target for being awesome) to take a photo of the other side. My camera was rolling and the following exchange was recorded.

Counter Protest Wrap Up

Let's break it down.

In North Carolina, it is now against the law for a transgender person to use a bathroom that doesn't match their biological sex.

There has been backlash. More than 100 companies and quite a few big musical acts have asked NC to repeal this law.

And some companies are flouting the law more directly.

From Target:

In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.

Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.

The above statement caused a growing group of angry people to demand a boycott of Target stores. "For the safety of children."

One such group organized in Clovis. (I cannot link to their event page as it has been removed at the time of this posting.)

Trans-E-Motion, the Pink Panthers, and Gay Central Valley joined other Target supporters for a Counter-Protest tonight.

Organizers on the Support Target side were happy with the general response, there were far more people going into Target than turning around and going home and what felt like more honks honked in agreement than disapproval. For the most part the sides kept their distance from one another, although there was a bit of name calling and a few obscene gestures  toward the Support Target side.

Videos and photos are available at the GCV Facebook page.

Counter Protest at Target TONIGHT

In response to discriminatory bills being passed around the country to ban transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice, Target has stated that they will allow people to use the bathroom of their choice, regardless of gender.

Some people have in turn decided to boycott Target. Tonight people who don't believe in equality for trans people are protesting the Target on Herndon and Willow in Clovis from 6-7 pm.

Trans-E-Motion will be doing a counter-protest to show our support for Target. Join us then, bring signs, use the restroom and buy some merchandise if possible.

EVENT: Culture Club in Concert

Boy George and Culture Club Announce
 40-city, 2016 Tour

The Iconic Band Returns for A Full Tour Across the U.S, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Asia

April 11, 2016 (Los Angeles) – Overwhelming excitement and outstanding reviews caused by Boy George and Culture Club's performances from last year's brief mini-tour of the U.S has driven the group to announce their first full tour in over 12 years spanning 40 cities across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia and Asia.  Known for dominating the charts worldwide with their classic hits including “Karma Chameleon,” “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” and “Miss Me Blind,” the iconic band will make a stop at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles on Saturday, August 20.

Throughout Culture Club’s 2015 mini-tour, the band received rave reviews from some of music’s toughest critics:

“But if you like to go out, if you like to feel good, if you like to be transported by music, if you’re in search of authenticity in a land inundated by fake. This is your gig’’ - Bob Leftsetz, The Leftsetz Letter

"headliner Culture Club provided soul aplenty, thanks to a large backing band consisting of female singers, a horn section and George’s own burnished vocals. “Church of the Poisoned Mind” was as vibrant as ever!"  - George A. Paul, Orange County Register

“Re-emphasized George as an outsider who found a path to acceptance by his sheer lovability," and the group's performance, "underscored the two themes of the night - the pull of nostalgia and the power of individuality.” - Jim Farber, New York Daily News

The Grammy Award®–winning band received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans last year as they reunited and toured 20 cities in North America, leading Culture Club band members Mikey Craig (bass guitar), Roy Hay (guitar and keyboards), Jon Moss (drums and percussion) and the flamboyant front-man Boy George (lead vocals) to embark on one of their biggest tours-to-date in 2016.

As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay front man, Culture Club has set many records, including being the first band since The Beatles to have three Top Ten hits in America from a debut album. In the eighties the band dominated the charts in over a dozen countries, with multi-platinum albums and more than 50 million albums sold worldwide to date. In 2014, Culture Club reunited to create new music and has been in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album Tribes, available now for pre-order, set to release later this year. The band recently headlined iHeart Radio’s 2016 “iHeart 80s Party” at The Forum in L.A. to a packed crowd.
