National Move to Ban Conversion Therapy

Courtesy The Advocate...

Several LGBT groups have joined together to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that practitioners of so-called conversion therapy, which aims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.

The federal consumer fraud complaint was filed today against a Virginia-based group called People Can Change, which claims that sexual orientation and gender identity can be changed through the power of prayer and counseling. People Can Change counseling in pursuit of this goal, in addition to referrals to other organizations that claim to be able to "cure" someone of being LGBT.

This claim has been soundly debunked by every major medical and psychiatric health organization in the country, while the discredited practice has been outlawed for use on minors in California, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Oregon. Last year, the White House and top Obama administration officials came out against the so-called conversion therapy, which received renewed attention after the public suicide note of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teenager who took her own life in Ohio in late 2014 after being subjected to what is sometimes called "reparative therapy" at the hands of a Christian counselor.

The federal complaint alleges that People Can Change — and all practitioners of what is also called "ex-gay" therapy — "defrauds consumers into believing that being LGBT is a mental illness or emotional defect that needs to be cured." The group's advertising of that false claim violates Section 5 of the FTC Act, which "prohibits unfair and deceptive practices," according to the complaint.

EVENT: Free Film At Unitarian Universalist

“N I C O T I N E B E E S”

SUNDAY night at 6:30 p.m. (Feb. 21)
At the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno
2672 E. Alluvial Avenue, Fresno CA 93720

Presented by the Fresno Center for Nonviolence
Co-sponsored by the UU Social Justice Coordinating Committee

Imagine going to the grocery store and finding no more avocados, plums, peaches, apricots, melons, pumpkins! This may not be too far off if we don’t act soon. Why? All these fruits need pollination by bees. Reports on Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) have been abundant, featuring researchers seeking answers as to why this is happening on a global scale. CCD is when billions of worker bees unexpectedly desert their colonies forever. The queen and some other hive members, like drones, cannot survive by themselves since they alone are unable to care for new broods. Many people think there isn’t a single cause but a combination of pesticides, aphids, spider mites, habitat loss and global warming. But the common denominator is pesticide use, particularly neonicotinoids, basically a synthetic form of nicotine used extensively on crops. The immune system of the bees is affected resulting in their inability to navigate. Hence, bees can’t find their way back to their colonies. The EPA has finally recognized that neonicotinoids pose a threat to some pollinators and has proposed a ban. 54 minutes.

Admission is free, though donations welcomed.

Wheelchair accessible. Light refreshments.

KampOut Fresno is one of the longest running LGBT events in Central Kalifornia. This event takes place every year in September, the weekend after Labor Day!

#GCVLoves Year 2!

Welcome to #GCVLoves Year 2!

As you might remember, last year the lovely Leilani Price hosted a series of videos for us at Gay Central valley in which we highlighted a few of the organizations that we love.

If you didn't see those videos, check them out here.

Anyway, As Miss Price is currently serving as Empress, this year we recruited the reclusive Rachel Cutrone from NY to come host our videos.

The organizations we feature are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of great organisation here in Fresno and in the Central Valley... as you know there are so many great people doing such great and important work right here in Fresno!

Enjoy the videos and check back each day up here on the blog or on our YouTube channel until Valentines Day to see who we are shining our spotlight on... then make sure you visit them on social media and show them some love!
