Q & A With Kathleen Reyna

Born and raised in the Central Valley, Dr. Kathleen Reyna currently teaches Political Science for the State Center Community College District and holds positions on various boards that include the City of Fresno's Street Fee's Appeals Board as the Mayoral Appointee and the Fresno Reel Pride Film Festival Board of Directors as the President of the Board.

How long have you lived in the Central Valley?

Born and raised in Selma, many travels and some short term living elsewhere, but the Central Valley has always been home.

Married or single?

Currently engaged and planning an April wedding.

When did you come out to the first person in your life?

Believe it or not, I had a plan that had me waiting until after law school, which coincided when my brother would turn 18. I wanted to ensure at an early age that neither education nor Michael could be taken from me. That was my official coming out time.

Something you like about yourself?

I like that I give my time to students who want to make a change in this world.

Something you dislike about yourself?

My serious side when i should be laughing.

Character trait in others that you most admire?

Character trait in others that you most dislike?

What is your biggest regret?

I have plenty of 'what ifs' not many regrets.

What are you most passionate about?

Favorite thing to do in your free time?

Spend time with family and friends.

What aggravates you the most?

I am guilty of road rage at least in my small cage. I hate when people can't/won't follow simple rules. (forgive me Tiana Perez, I read your answers and I am also guilty)

What makes you the happiest?

Cuddling up with my puppy dog.

What are you, quite frankly, over?

Can we say DRAMA one more time? I always find it interesting that the people talking the most smack are those that have no idea. Just amazing.

What is your biggest challenge?

As you may guess from my previous response, biting my tongue when I can give a more PC answer.

What was your favorite decade so far?

Socially, I loved the 80's. Personally, I'm living in it right now.

Who is your favorite person to talk to?

I enjoy talking to my college friend in Chicago. She has always been my Jiminy Cricket.

Name a person you know personally who has had the biggest impact on you?

My youngest brother has had the largest impact. Life changed when he came to be and has not stopped influencing my world since. ( He's pretty awesome, just don't tell him I said that. )

Name a person you don’t know who has had the biggest impact on you.

Author Samuel Beckett. I read his play "Waiting for Godot" when I was younger and it had a profound impact on my views if the world.

The most important lesson you’ve learned so far?

Love and allow others to love you.

Besides a phone, what piece of technology can you not live without?

Are there others???

What superpower would you most like to have?

Oh my!!! Umm, so many to choose from! X-ray vision, mind control, flight, teleportation.... I'll have to take a pass on this one. I'm afraid my plot to take over the world will be exposed.

Who would you like to play you in a movie about your life?

I always figured it would be a cartoon. So i think if we can just get the voice and comedic timing of Tina Fey, I'll be happy.

What is the best part of your day?

Coming home to my family.

What is your proudest moment?

So far, the moment occurred when the Reel Pride Board delivered one of the most successful years for the 25th Anniversary. I was very proud of my fellow members.

Who did you overlook in your past?

I think  I overlooked myself and I'm sure many others that I should have recognized.

What have you overcome?

I'm not certain I have had a struggle worthy of the term "overcome"

Where your ideal place to live?

Close to family and hopefully somewhere close to the coast.

What words do you live by?

"...Within me, there's something stronger-- something better.."
