Happy Spirit Day!

Millions go purple on Spirit Day in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Observed annually since 2010, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, and public figures wear purple, which symbolizes 'spirit' on the rainbow flag.

From your web browserUse GLAAD's Spirit Day tool to turn your profile picture purple, and then spread the word by posting to Twitter and Facebook.

From your smartphone: GLAAD and Toyota Financial Services have launched the "Go Purple for #spiritday powered by Toyota Financial Services" app for iPhone and Android. The app provides users with anti-bullying resources, calls to action, and a tool that can turn photos purple and share to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The free app is now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

Let us know if you take part!

Show off your Purple Pic on our Facebook Page!

Alaska Rules Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

Courtesy Chicago Tribune

A U.S. federal judge on Sunday ruled that the state of Alaska's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

Judge Timothy Burgess of the U.S. District Court for Alaska made the ruling after hearing oral arguments on Friday challenging the state's 16-year-old ban, saying it added to discrimination already faced by gay and lesbian people every day.

"Alaska's denial of the benefits and dignity of marriage for them only perpetuates this discrimination without legitimate grounds," Burgess wrote.

EVENT: LGBT+ Leadership Summit

IMOW: Lesbian rapper breaks hip hop glass ceiling.

"In my own words..." is a platform for our community members to share essays, poetry, art, reviews, commentary, etc. “In My Own Words” is not the opinion of Gay Central Valley, but rather the person who submits the article. If you would like to submit something, please email Kaylia at

A Positive Movement in Hip Hop
Yolanda Walker

Hip Hop rap culture has been around for many years. Those who are familiar with the rap industry ideologies and its practices know that there is a (not always silent) homophobic stigma towards LGBT rap artists.

However, as the Hip Hop culture evolves into a new generation, a determined, innovative, and liberating lesbian rap artist named Siya has generated much buzz within the Hip Hop community.

Her willingness to share her sexuality and talent has generated mixed reviews, but Siya has gained a lot of support from major music labels and well known rap artists who both embrace her sexuality and recognize her fierce talent.

This positive movement within the Rap / Hip Hop culture can only mean good things for Hip Hop generations to come.

Siya, born Michele Sherman, is an openly gay rapper, who became infamously known for her spot on complex magazines "10 New York rappers to watch for". She currently stars on Sisterhood of Hip Hop, an American reality television series on Oxygen starring five female rappers who "navigate their way through the male-dominated music industry." The show premiered on August 12, 2014.

EVENT: Walking Dead SHE BAR

Fresno Transgender Day Of Remebrance 2014

FREE LGBT Dance Workshop Coming To Fresno

Fresno LGBT Center HAS To Move - Please DONATE

Our landlord has just informed us that our rent will be going up by 70% starting December 1st!!! (We will also now face a monthly utility bill on top of this huge increase.)

This leaves us in a bad position. As many of you know, our current space has some major drawbacks: wheelchair accessibility, size (it is very small), heating and cooling issues, the inability to have larger community events (we no longer have permission to host things like our annual Spring Fling Event etc), and the lack of private and clean bathrooms.

This increase is detrimental to our current community outreach and severely limits our ability to function and grow

We have found a new location that is still in the Tower District and will cost around the same amount as the rent increase… but is almost three times the size and has NONE of the above issues.

Moving to a new place is a big deal and requires a big leap of faith in our community.

As you know, Gay Central Valley is supported by the community we serve and has no paid positions (Staff and Board members are all volunteer). Virtually all our operational expenses come from fundraising events, tip jars, and donors like you.

When you contribute to this campaign, you will ensure that the community center not only survives but thrives.

We are hoping to raise the first six months rent as well as the security deposit in the next 30 days so we can make this move happen. 100% of your donation (which is tax deductible) goes directly to meet our goal of $6,165.

Some of the FREE programs at the LGBT Center….

  • Registered Safe Place with Fresno EOC
  • Resource hub with information and brochures for dozens of community groups and events
  • Legal Rights Workshops
  • Media Lending Library (books and DVDs) with community computer and printer
  • Twice a month HIV and Hep C testing
  • Transgender Clothing Exchange
  • Name / Gender Change Workshops
  • Tax workshops for same sex couples
  • Family Planning seminars
  • Financial Planning Seminars
  • Game days
  • Spring Fling Health Fair
  • Ongoing support and social groups (Poly Family, Sexual Compulsives, Book Club, Transgender Support, Movie Night, LGBT Chat, Pink Panthers, Weight Loss)

Our new location will allow us to continue facilitating all of these programs and groups as well as many many more.

PLEASE consider supporting YOUR Fresno LGBT Community Center!

Thank you!

VIDEO: Supreme Court Rejects Marriage Appeals

BREAKING: Marriage Rights Get A Big Win

Courtesy Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Monday set the United States on a historic civil rights path, paving the way for the majority of Americans to reside in states where same-sex marriage is legal.

The court declined to hear appeals from five states that were challenging lower-court rulings legalizing same-sex marriage. By passing on that debate, the court gave a final legal stamp of approval to marriage equality in five states: Indiana, Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin. It also set the stage for legalization in six other states that also fall under the lower courts' jurisdiction: Colorado, Wyoming, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
When all is said and done in those states (which could happen in short order, according to the Associated Press), same-sex marriage will be legal in 30 states and the District of Columbia.

The total population of those states, based on 2013 estimates from the Census Bureau, is about 190 million. Just over 60 percent of the U.S. population now lives in a state where marriage equality soon will be legal.

Prior to Monday, that total was just under 44 percent -- if you discounted states where same-sex marriage was legalized but there were still court challenges. In all, the Supreme Court's decision on Monday set the path for an additional 51,579,771 people to live in states with concrete same-sex marriage rights.

Breaking the 50 percent threshold represents a monumental achievement for the gay rights community -- one that few could have envisioned just years ago. But it's a touch bittersweet for advocates who will note that 48 percent of the population remains in areas where same-sex marriage is banned, and who were hoping the court would weigh in on whether marriage for same-sex couples is a constitutional right.

"[W]e are one country, with one Constitution, and the Court’s delay in affirming the freedom to marry nationwide prolongs the patchwork of state-to-state discrimination and the harms and indignity that the denial of marriage still inflicts on too many couples in too many places," said Freedom to Marry President Evan Wolfson. "As waves of freedom to marry litigation continue to surge, we will continue to press the urgency and make the case that America -- all of America -- is ready for the freedom to marry, and the Supreme Court should finish the job."
