Minnesota High School Approves New Trans Policies

Courtesy The Advocate...
The Minnesota State High School League Thursday approved a list of guidelines for including trans students in school sports, facilities, and activities, despite ongoing right-wing protest, reports Twin Cities TV station KARE.
The decision came three days after the Department of Educationclarified its stance under Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 that schools "generally must treat transgender students consistent with their gender identity" in single-sex activities and spaces.
With the MSHSL's decision, Minnesotan trans students in the nearly 500 public and private high schools that are members of the league will be allowed — once they submit a confidential written request to their school — to participate in single-sex activities and use the restrooms, locker rooms, and showers that accord with their affirmed gender, starting with the 2015-2016 school year. The policy passed nearly unanimously, with 18 voting in favor, one opposed, and one abstention.

Goodbye to Jessica!

Gay Central Valley doesn't want to, but we're forced to say goodbye to Jessica Graves, one of our board members. Jessica is moving to Sacramento for a new and exciting job opportunity. She will be missed by all. She brought energy and insight to the GCV board and was always there to help us with our events and fundraisers, particularly the fundraising parties at the North Tower Circle over the years.

Best of luck!
Watch out for a road trip from us at Gay Central Valley!

Thank You!

A Huge THANK YOU to all of our community who came froward and donated to our recent "The Center Matters" fundraiser. We met our goal and are very excited at the next chapter of the Fresno LGBT Community Center.

Of course there is still a lot to do... and we are still in need of monthly donors, but in this month of Thanksgiving, we wanted to say how touched we were by the generosity and support of our community.

Thank you!

Missouri's Ban On Marriage Equality Ruled Unconstitutional

(Reuters) - Missouri's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, a St. Louis circuit judge ruled on Wednesday, adding momentum to efforts in states across the country to legalize gay nuptials.

The decision comes a day after a federal judge ruled that neighboring Kansas also was violating the U.S. Constitution by refusing to allow same-sex marriages. More than 30 U.S. states permit same-sex couples to marry.

"Marriage equality is now the law of the land in the state of Missouri," said Winston Calvert, the city attorney for St. Louis, who argued against the state's same-sex marriage ban. "This decision finally enforces that constitutional guarantee of equality for gay and lesbian couples."

In his ruling, St. Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison said that "the freedom to marry is a fundamental right and liberty deeply rooted in the history of the United States." He found that the state ban on same-sex marriage was not tied to a "legitimate government interest."

GCV Certified Enrollment Counselors

Gay Central Valley is part of a Covered California grant through the Health Access Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to reach out to the underserved LGBT community in the Central Valley regarding health insurance and get them signed up through Covered California. While the focus of this particular grant is the LGBT population, we are able to sign up anyone for health insurance coverage.

We will be working on this project starting on November 15th, when open enrollment for 2014 begins. Open enrollment runs through February 15th, 2015. During open enrollment, Californians can sign up for health insurance through the health exchange. Certified Enrollment Counselors are able to assist those in the process, introducing them to the details and walking them through the process.

We are reaching out, seeking locations throughout the enrollment period which will allow us access to those requiring assistance. This could be an event, a health fair or something more location based, such as a health organization or business. Our Certified Enrollment Counselors are paid through the grant, so there is no cost to you or the people we assist.

Please let us know if there is any way we can assist you by providing this valuable service. It is vital that people are made aware of the value that health insurance provides and are granted access to personalized assistance.

Our Certified Enrollment Counselors are Kayleia Southard and Chris Jarvis. You can call us at 559-325-4429

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you meet the needs of Californians signing up for insurance in 2014-2015.

Happy Spirit Day!

Millions go purple on Spirit Day in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Observed annually since 2010, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, and public figures wear purple, which symbolizes 'spirit' on the rainbow flag.

From your web browserUse GLAAD's Spirit Day tool to turn your profile picture purple, and then spread the word by posting to Twitter and Facebook.

From your smartphone: GLAAD and Toyota Financial Services have launched the "Go Purple for #spiritday powered by Toyota Financial Services" app for iPhone and Android. The app provides users with anti-bullying resources, calls to action, and a tool that can turn photos purple and share to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The free app is now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

Let us know if you take part!

Show off your Purple Pic on our Facebook Page!
