In silhouette cast by the light of a solitary candle, two women speak softly about their inability to express their love in public—because in a country where they arrest people for making love, discretion is the most important skill one can master. Such is the life of the gay men and lesbians of Cameroon, an African nation where homosexuality is punishable by up to five years in prison. But filmmakers Shaun Kadlec and Deb Tullmann have found their way into the underground gay and lesbian community here and have discovered some signs of hope and change. Amidst the homophobia, fear, illness, and unemployment, there is still great joy, friendship, music, and culture—and the sense that the country is on the verge of positive change.

Under pressure from family and their own sexual confusion, their relationship takes dramatic ups and downs and the sensual romance they share in private begins to clash with harsh reality. As one game-changing opportunity fades and a last hope for escape emerges, their bond is tested to its breaking point.

On New Year’s Eve, shy, HIV-positive Claudio is set up on a blind date with the immaculate Adelchi. But this is no tete-a-tete: The dinner party includes Claudio’s hard-edged lesbian sis, Francesca; Adelchi’s confused straight sister, Silvia; his outrageously camp friend, Marco; and other hangers-on. As the evening progresses, and in the months to follow, they all fight, sleep together, sleep with others, and ultimately determine what it is to form a family.
