EVENT: The Rep - A Documentary

Co-sponsored by Fresno Reel Pride
Sunday, August 18, 2013; 2:00 p.m.
The Tower Theater

Filmworks presents the Canadian documentary that The Austin Chronicle says “urgently encourages us to support our local repertory cinemas — tonight!” The film follows the lives of three film geeks during the first year of operations of their single-screen repertory cinema in Toronto. In the face of strong competition from big-box multiplex theaters, on-demand streaming services, and home video, the trio fights an uphill battle. The film also takes a broad look at the world of independent cinema across North America. Devalued by studios, corporate theaters, and patrons themselves, movies in the digital age have become less of an experience and more of an activity. Repertory cinema is a quickly shrinking but still-passionate world of film lovers trying to keep the experience of cinema alive. Featuring commentary from Kevin Smith, John Waters, Atom Egoyan, and more. Will include a post-screening community conversation with Filmworks board members, where patrons will be encouraged to share their ideas for keeping cinema alive in Fresno.
Director: Morgan WhiteCanada (2012) • 99 minutes • Not rated
