Just days after the controversy erupted over the Obama Administration choosing an anti-gay priest, Rev. Louie Giglio, to deliver the benediction at the upcoming inauguration, it's all been reversed. Rev. Luis Leon will now deliver the benediction instead, a replacement that has been confirmed but will be officially announced in the coming days.
Leon's own parish is known for welcoming openly gay members. The church, which has openly gay, non-celibate priests and has had a gay bishop, announced this summer that it would bless same-sex partnerships and ordain transgender priests. This month, the Washington National Cathedral, an Episcopal church, announced that it would also begin same-sex marriage ceremonies.
Obama and his family have attended St. John's many times during his first term. Former President George W. Bush, attended the church regularly as well. Leon gave the invocation at Bush's 2005 Inaugural.
Given the confusion and anger in the LGBT Community when the administration gave the job to anti-gay Giglio, it's encouraging that the change was made. Maybe this is the start of a great many GREAT things for the LGBT Community to come through Obama's second term. Let's hope...
